Server slowing down with INSERT INTO queries

I recently moved data from Access to MySQL and everything is working fine.
However, I have to generate a large report in which I run 10 "append" queries which are inserted into a temporary table.
This one report takes a very long time when a lot of people are using the sever (6+ connections). It runs fast when only a few people are using the server.
Is there a specific buffer I can increase that will help?
Or any other suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

P.S., I can't run this from the server as the queries depend on varying dates the user inputs on a form.
