Thanks to a colleague, I've now found the answer to this. The key is to set the table's Subdatasheet Name property to [None]. Full details can be found at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275085. Although this article says it applies to both Access 2002 and 2003, for me, at least, it seems that Access 2003 is the one that's really affected.
