Access is slow

I converted our Access database to MySQL. Now I still want to use Access as the front end. I installed the ODBC driver and it works. The problem is that when I simply open a table, it takes about 5 seconds. Then if I hit the button to go to the end of the database, it takes about 30 seconds. I have about 100,000 records of 5 fields. When I watch the task manager for running process, MySQLd-nt cpu usage goes up to about 50% for about 1 second, then back to zero. I then see the csrss.exe and the Access.exe process go to about 40%/60% respectivly. Combined they stay at 100% for about 30 seconds. After that I can move to any record without any hesitation.

MySQL is running on the same machine as access. Localhost connection. WindowsXP, AMD 1.3 athlon. 630megs of ram.
