Are you validating the visitor's name & password anywhere? In your initial post you refer to a table that holds usernames & passwords, but I can't see that being used.
However, I'm assuming that the error occurs when you try and insert into the visitors table. Is is possible to echo out the sql statement that the code constructs in each case for 3/5 letter usernames? Does the error occur with any name longer than 3 characters, or just with David/qqq? What about Nick/abc for example?

PS - please don't get me wrong - I wasn't implying that your asp code was at fault - just trying to see exactly what was being sent to the engine via the interface.
