Access to MYSQL

Hi there I am busy converting a vb6 project db from accesss to mysql. The project has been worked on by 4 people, I will be the 5th, there is query that I do not understand and does not want to work with mysql. Here it is:

Select * from tblSpecialDates where cdbl(cdate(spDate)) < cdbl(cdate(format(now,'dd/mm/yyyy')))

I do not understand the query and the cdbl function. I have googled for hours with no luck. Can anyone please help??
