I just came across this myself, and thought I'd mention that it is now a recognised bug: http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=67428
Google found this post, but not the bug report.

It is reported as only being affected on servers below version 5.5.3.

From my experiments with Access 2010 on win 7 x64 I can confirm that:
the ansi version of connector 5.2.2 works as expected,
and connector V 5.1.11 works as expected.
