"Automatic" is less simple than it sounds, eg what's the software to do while a user is adding or editing a row?

One way this is often handled is to maintain a semaphore table that tracks all changes, and have the frontend software poll the semaphore table every N secs and decide what needs to be updated on screen according to what's happening there.
