Ich habe MySQL neu installiert. Dieses mal in der Version 5.1 (vorher 5.0). Der Fehler tritt immer noch auf, allerdings nunmehr nur noch bei den Datenbanken "information_schema" und "mysql". Die Datenbank "test" kann ich problemlos über MySQL Administrator öffnen und dort auch Tabellen erstellen.

Ich bin nun schon ein wenig ratlos.

Ach ja. Falls es noch nicht klar sein sollte, ich arbeite unter WinXP.
