Yikes, piling kludge upon kludge, hack upon hack. Errors multiply as you see. You've been misusing the date type.

Better solution: create yr,mo,day columns, export data from your date column to those columns, adjust indexes and insert/update logic accordingly.

An RDBMS implements a rigorous theory of database management. It isn't a freeform innovation project. As mysql use cases get more sophisticated, hacks and kludges of the sort you describe here become more problematic, less tolerable. Most of us need mysql to improve its ISO SQL compliance, as it's doing.
