Roles & Responsibilities

The Database Administrator II (DBA II) supports our existing database instances and participates in their design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing management and maintenance. This role is vital to meeting Avadyne Health’s strict requirements for application scalability, availability, and performance. The DBA II needs a wide range of experience as they will be called upon to interact with a number of business units; but they must maintain an enterprise-wide view of data accessibility and integrity as a vital corporate asset. While the primary database technology is MySQL/MariaDB, candidates with experience with MSSQL, InterSystems Cache, or Informix will be given stronger consideration.

Provide support for MySQL/MariaDB/MSSQL Server/InterSystems Cache/Informix database instances across production and development environments across multiple office and data center locations

Performance tuning MySQL/MariaDB and MSSQL Server database instances

Communicating in a timely manner all issues, risks, concerns and status to management

Review/perform data manipulations (DML) and data definition (DDL) changes to support application requirements

Serve in an on-call rotation as an escalation contact for critical production issues and drive escalation/resolution of problems into the IT HelpDesk/Customer Support teams

Coordinate with developers and data team members to design, review, and optimize complex SQL queries

Develop and maintain database monitoring tools and automation systems

Participates in the capacity planning, budgeting, and implementation of new database instances to meet operational needs

Manage replication links between master-slave/master-master to maintain high availability

Monitor performance and tune database configurations/tables to optimize for a variety of workloads

Perform/maintain backup and restoration of MySQL/MariaDB and MSSQL Server instances

Provide data warehousing support to data teams

Maintain comprehensive documentation and standards on production database environments

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills; ability to take ownership and exercise good judgment

Strong communicator and works independently, as well as in a team environment

Technical Skills (Required Skills)

Minimum of 4 years administering MySQL/MariaDB servers in a mission critical environment

Expert at troubleshooting MySQL/MariaDB related issues (lock contention, high load, slow queries, performance, etc) and identifying root causes

Proficiency with MySQL/MariaDB/MSSQL query structure, syntax, testing, and optimization

Experience working with MySQL/MariaDB replication and high-availability designs (load balancers, sharding, clustering)

Proficient with the CLI and a working understanding with CentOS/RHEL

Experience administering large InnoDB engine tables/high-quantity table databases

Technical Skills (Desired Skills)

BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline

Ability to script using Bash/Perl/Python to automate database activities

Experience working with MySQL data on a Storage Area Network (SAN)

Experience with Nagios, Cacti, MONyog, Oracle Enterprise Monitor or other monitoring tools

Experience with CentOS/RHEL systems administration and various systems automation/centralized management tools

Experience Level: 4+ years
