InnoDB can handle thousands of INSERTs per second -- under selected circumstances.

Tune memory:

Set:
innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 2

How big is the table? (SHOW TABLE STATUS)
What indexes do you have? (SHOW CREATE TABLE)
