Oops, I misread that as per second. That's only 300/second -- ok but not great.

Ways to speed up INSERTs:
* Batch (multiple rows on one INSERT)
* LOAD DATA
* RAID striping
* innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 2 (versus = 1)
* Insert in PRIMARY KEY order
* Minimize secondary keys, especially 'random' ones

Any of those suggestions has a chance of speeding up INSERTs by 10-fold. The details vary.
