I understand (thanks for explaining!). For the reason you mention, I can see the advantage to merge over symbolic-links.

My situation is that I am unfortunately forced to maintain table Y in addition to table X, but I simply want Y to be a mirror-image (at each moment in time) of table X.

The only way I know of to do this is the merge tactic; is there another way in MySQL?
