After a little fun with limits.conf and ulimit I was able to go beyond 16k tables in the Merge spec on the
box I'm using for testing. We'll never do this in production, it was more to see if I *could* :) Your
response helped me see through something I completely overlooked...

I was only looking at the values from /proc/sys/fs/files-max and files-nr (which apparently do very
little), ignoring (foolishly) limits.h and ulimit :/ ... I'll need to keep this in mind on our production server
- we haven't bumped up against it there yet (amazingly), but I think that's more from how we use
MySQL and some dumb luck than anything else. :)
