Database Links As Custom Storage Engine

I'm currently working on a system where I would like to have link certain tables so that instead of selecting the data from the local store mysql would connect to a remote database. One way I thought this could be implemented would be by setting up a custom storage engine similar to the Federated engine, except that instead of connecting specifically to a remote mysql database that you could connect to an ODBC data source (or other database abstraction layer, I'm not picky.)

Ideally you would somehow specify the connection parameters in the CREATE TABLE statement, but it seems that this might be difficult if not impossible to implement.

At this point since the system I'm working on consolidates the database access code in one location I am probably doing to break out access to the multiple databases there, but I don't have to like it... :)
