internal row format for blob

I'm working on a storage engine which supports blobs, but I'm having some trouble finding a definitive source for the internal row format which mysql uses. I've pieced together most of the basic data types and how a variable length row is stored in the internal row buffer, but I had a question on the blob . . .

My understanding is that the data for this column consists of an int length followed by the location in memory where the blob exists.

If I want to write the blob to a table, is the idea that I should memcpy from the address in the buf to a local buffer then write? I'm not really clear on how to accomplish this with respect to casting the address in the buf to a proper pointer and using it in memcpy. Thanks.
