There isn't a tidy solution at present, your only option is to use an IF statement as you have. You could use a handler and a statement you know will fail but that's far from idea.

MySQL supports the ANSI condition format which should be used to allow you to raise errors manually but it hasn't been done yet and there are no firm plans to include it in the future.
