Although I specify the character set for my query in stored procedure, mysql still translate the query to use NAME_CONST and causes the query not using index and slow the performance. Any suggestion on how to improve the performance?

SELECT COUNT(*) INTO Cnt FROM tblimx_tree_ref WHERE CONVERT(MemberID USING utf8) COLLATE utf8_general_ci = CONVERT(InMemberID USING utf8) COLLATE utf8_general_ci;
