ROW_COUNT() results in NULL from stored procedure

output parameter: OUT p_rowsAffected INT

PREPARE stmt FROM @sql;
EXECUTE stmt;
SET p_rowsAffected = ROW_COUNT(); // all I get out of this is NULL
DEALLOCATE PREPARE stmt;
