Protecting stored procedures in a commercial product

Hi
This is my first post here so greetings...
I am in the process of moving away from SQL Server to MySQL and am wondering how people go about protecting code in stored procedures etc. I understand that sql servers encryption can be bypassed fairly easily and am not necessarily looking for the same solution. Rather, how do developers protect their IPR? Is it simply the case of having a confidentiality agreement or something similar.
Sorry if this is an old topic, couldn’t find anything in the forums. Also, I’ve worked only on internal systems for the last 20 years so I’ve no recent experience working on commercial products.
Cheers
Mark
