Triggers, Table Access Restrictions, and History Tables

I'd like to be able to maintain history tables via triggers. That is, when an insert or update is made to table foo, a copy of that row (more/less) is added to a table called foo_hist..

Triiggers surrently inherit a limitation of functions in that they cannot reference other tables in MySQL.

Any idea if this is/will be supported in 5.0? Is there any mention of this issue with respect to the release roadmap?
