Looks like a bug...

Unfortunately I was not able to repeat your crash with 5.0.4 and current 5.0 snapshot. MySQL does not crash and returns expected result for me... :(

Could you please try it with 5.0.6 ?
(Please read note about upgrading tables with DECIMAL columns at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/news-5-0-6.html)

If crash is still repeatable for you with this version could you please go to http://bugs.mysql.com/ and report it as bug?

Don't forget to provide:
a) Information about platform which you are using
b) Full definitions of tables you have used (better as SHOW CREATE TABLE output)
c) Exact sequence of statements which leads to the crash
d) If possible provide resolved stack trace of mysqld at the moment of crash
