slave-load-tmpdir?

I'm running Mysql 4.1.11 standard on Linux. I keep getting errors, "can't create/write to '/root/tmp/'(various filenames)

The only place this path shows up under mysqld --help is for "slave-load-tmpdir".

Now I don't know that I did anything to configure a slave, and I can't see anywhere that this path is defined, or how to change it. I've installed Mysql a couple times, and don't know what I did wrong this time.

Help!
