You know, I'm really not quite sure. However, I can imagine that if you uninstalled MySQL, the installation _may_ have left the databases intact, in your datadir. If this is the case, the mysql system database, which stores password information, may have continued to contain the same records, which might result in the situation you're experiencing. Try uninstalling, then removing any databases that remain in your datadir.
