Where, exactly, did you copy your old files to?
Which files did you copy?

What operating system are you using, *nix, Windows or MAC?

Then you aren't copying your files to the data folder pointed to in the my.cnf / my.ini file.

You also stand more of a chance of getting your data back with the (not recommended) file copy method if you use an identical version of MySQL. The table formats can, and do, change between versions.
