I've been building 5.1 successfully on SuSE 9.3 (2.6.11.4-21.9-default) and SuSE 10.0 (2.6.13-9-default) using:

configure='CC=gcc CXX=gcc CFLAGS="-Wall -pedantic -Wno-long-long" CXXFLAGS="-Wall -pedantic -Wno-long-long" ./configure --with-ndbcluster --with-readline --with-row-based-replication --with-blackhole-storage-engine --with-csv-storage-engine --with-archive-storage-engine --enable-thread-safe-client --with-ndb-test --with-partition --with-ndbcc-flags="-g -DERROR_INSERT"'

I just (about 15 minutes ago) rebuilt from the latest source on SuSE 10, no crashing problems so far.

What are you using to start the server daemon?
