Login as root.
Create a new "super" user to replace root.
Provide the new "super" user with SUPER privilege, along with all the usual suspects.
FLUSH PRIVILEGES to make mysql re-read the privileges table.
Logout.
Login as the new "super" user.
Revoke all the unwanted privileges, including SUPER, from root.
FLUSH PRIVILEGES.

Good luck,
Barry.
