New install access denied for 'root'@'localhost'

Installed on a virtual server hosted by Hetzner a complete Debian LAMP server. Fresh install, no modifications, latest versions, MySQL is Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.5.37, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 6.2

Can not log into the server at all. Apparently there should be no initial root password on a new installation. At least, I do not know of one. Instead of password I just press "return". No access possible using webmin.

I found various posts related to Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost, but non relating to a new installation.

"mysql -u root -p
Warning: Using unique option prefix pass instead of password is deprecated and will be removed in a future release. Please use the full name instead.
Enter password:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)"
