Thank you for the report. We are aware of this issue. The startup item is incompatible with OS X 10.10. It will still install on an upgraded system because the upgrade to OS X 10.10 doesn't remove certain system files from existing OS X systems that are no longer used in 10.10, but the startup item will not function either way.
Future releases will not fail installation, but for now, the workaround is disabling the startup item, as you found.
