Cannot stop mysql 5.6

We recently inherited a mysql environment on RHL 6 with Server version: 5.6.19-enterprise-commercial-advanced MySQL Enterprise Server - Advanced Edition (Commercial).

I tired do a stop of mysql and get the following error:

$ sudo /sbin/service mysql stop

ERROR! MySQL server PID file could not be found

Anyone know what causes this error or suggestions what to look for?
