"Not released" -- based on what information? top? task manager? something else?

What happens if you re-create the table? Does the memory usage go up? or simply reuse what was "not released"?

It is rarely practical to use large MEMORY tables. After all, allocating space for such takes away from cache space for other engines, thereby slowing down all other tables.
