It's not large by some definitions but Wikipedia sees around 200 million selects and 2.1 million inserts/updates per day, using InnoDB for most of them. Total database size is around 180GB. Dual Opterons with six drive RAID 10 sets, 4 or 8GB of RAM and a master with a couple of slaves are sufficient for that. Add in another couple of slaves for fulltext search through about 6GB of text and related queries. Depends very heavily on the exact nature of the queries and most are fairly simple.
