Update: I'm seeing the same bad behavior when I use the RHEL5 RPM distribution (64-bit) for 5.0.51a from mysql.com, so it's not a matter of 5.0 vs. 5.1.

My guess now is there's some key difference between how the CentOS 5 distribution was built and how the MySQL RHEL 5 distributions were built. Since I built 5.1 from source myself and saw the same problems, I have no idea what that difference could be. Any guesses before I start trial-and-error builds would be greatly appreciated!
