How does group commit work?

I've been looking around for some information about how group commit actually is done in InnoDB.

What is it that decides when to perform a group commit, and which transactions are chosen to be commited? My only guess would be when the innodb log buffer is full, but I havent seen it being stated explicitly.

If anyone could enlighten me about this, or point me to some information, it would be greatly appreciated.
