After posting this query I did actually identify the bug in question and posted it here:
http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=40874
If there are any developers of the GIS branch reading this thread, it would be good to get this looked at! Even if it just returned a friendly MySQL error - "BUFFER() on LINESTRING not supported" or something - that would be better than runaway memory usage.
