Hi,

Slow connect times are almost always related to DNS issues. Make sure that you have a hostname for the remote server on the server running mysqld. Also keep in mind if windows is involved the name resolution can be quite slow due to the windows networking name resolution.

If you can't change the DNS time then try running mysqld with the --skip-name-resolve which should make it skip that step as well. Just keep in mind you can only specify remote servers by IP and not hostname now.
