Just for the record, it is some DNS issue as Harrison suggested. When I wrote my previous response I was looking at client to server DNS lookups. I later realized that Harrison was referring to server to client DNS lookups, so I added the client name to the server hosts table and voila, response times are instantaneous again.
This is obviously a workaround, since I do want to have DNS working properly, but it gives me time to work on it without my users complaining.
