MySQL 5.1 Performance Issues

Hi,
We recently upgraded 4 MySQL Slaves from 4.1.22 to 5.1.32. On MySQL 4.1 we have no issues as far as concern about performance but on MySQL 5.1 we are facing serious isssues like queries are stucking in regular intervals resutls "Too many connections".
Also when i kill any specific query from processlist. It still remains in processlist with State Killing look likes query not killed while on MySQL 4.1 query kills without any problem. And we notice that when query queue grows (processlist) and i restart the MySQL Server it doesn't restarts it's show in progress. It also look likes MySQL doesnot restart before finishing entire query queue. We are getting MySQL Server alerts quite regularly from the day we upgraded to MySQL 5.1. Please help me out to get rid of this problem.
