I just read your last line so my answer made no sense.

Next try:
Why are you using: int(11) for type and year
Can't you use just INT (Range from -2147483648 - 2147483647 ) or SMALLINT (-32768 - 32767 ) for your fields especially the index fields.

Thats only 4 or 2 Bytes per field and not 11.
The index is stored in Blocks.
And the smaller the Index is, the less blocks have to be read from the HD.
Same with the whole record.

for Query 1 I just would try
KEY(type,year)
and no other INDEX
