"Replication" is a technical term in MySQL. It refers to having two (or more) servers, one being a "Master" and the other(s) being replicas holding identical data. "Replication" is the process whereby the write statements are sent from the Master to the Slave.
Slaves can be used for backup, failover, read scaling, etc.
