OPTIMIZE TABLE reads and rewrites the entire table. 27GB will take hours.

Why are you running OPTIMIZE? It is _rarely_ useful.

Is the table MyISAM or InnoDB?

Killing an ALTER or OPTIMIZE throws away the new copy of the table that it is building and unlocks the original table.

If the table is PARTITIONed, do REORGANIZE PARTITION, one partition at a time, instead of OPTIMIZEing the whole table at once.

What does "Optimization with auto repair" mean?
