there's a default engine parameter in my.cnf, yes.

Logic is that when a MySQL server has ndbcluster enabled and isn't connected to one, we shouldn't allow the creation of tables as they may exist in the (currently disconnected) cluster.

InnoDB is not a clustered engine.

Also, I very strongly recommend using 5.0 and not using 4.1
