You should use ntpd instead of ntpdate to synchronize the times. If ntpd notices your time is out of sync from the time server, it will actually slow or accelerate clock ticks to make up the difference. This will avoid time-warps when the clock is out-of sync. Use ntpdate initially to set all servers to the same time, then rely upon ntpd to keep them in sync.
