mysqldump: error while using LOCK TABLES

When I try to use mysqldump to backup certain databases I get the error:

mysqldump: Got error: 1017: Can't find file: '<name of the table>.MYI' (errno: 2) when using LOCK TABLES

I couldn't find any info on the forums or the reference manual. I'm not even sure where the problem lies. Any hint is very appreciated. Thank you.
