aes_encrypt?

Hello, I'm kind of new to PHP and don't quite understand what I read in the manual about AES_ENCRYPT(str,key_str) and AES_DECRYPT(str,key_str).

I assume "str" (string) is the password, which can be assigned to a variable like "$password".
However, I am unsure: what is the "key_str" (key string)?
