Connector/net Installation problem?

I think I may have missed something...
I have installed the connector and attempted to use the commands listed in the documentation but they are not recognized by Visual Studio so I can not compile my programs...
Did I miss where I need to tell VS that I have this installed????
I'd do fine if I could get to the point where I can use the code...
