ah COALESCE() is just what I am after... I did search the manual but unless you know the name of a function, it's not so easy to work out what is best for you to use.. thanks!

I did miss the where part from this post, I had lots of stuff commented out in the procedure trying to narrow down where the problem was.

I assume I need to prefix my params - is that because its not case sensitive? and is getting confused with my table column name?

I read the post about the variables and I think I understand it now. If you do use @ at the beginning of your variable name is it implying that you don't have to declare it and instead it works out for itself what the type should be? I've removed the @ sign because all I wanted was something local to the procedure.
