1251 client does not support... Dreamweaver/MySQL db connection

I am using MySQL 4.1.8, PHP 4.3.10, Dreamweaver MX (w/ dwmx61-updater installed). MyODBC 3.51.10 has been installed. I have admin privileges and MySQL server is operating at the command line. Heres where I'm experiencing trouble. I enter the following in the dialog box that comes up after clicking "MySQL Connection".
Connection name: connBooks
MySQL server: localhost
User: root
Password: ******* (MySQL version 4.1.8 uses 42 bit encryption)
Database: !!! When I attempt to browse to a database, I get this: "1251 Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client."
Please, what does it mean, what will I need to do to correct it? I have checked my password table in mysql and found it is the long type 42 bit encryption, not the 16 bit. Is this part of the problem?
