Unicode and Mysql

I'm trying to insert chinese characters into mysql from a script, but I'm having trubles. Added CHARACTER SET utf8 when creating my table and then trying to insert \u79BB or 0x79BB. The first one does not work and the second one is interped as two characters 0x79 and 0xBB. What am I doing wrong?
