Upgrading mysql to 4.0.24

I have just followed MYSQL reference manual 2.3.15 to upgrade mysql from 4.0.20 to 4.0.24. Everything appeared to upgrade correctly, but the version is still showing 4.0.20. I have searched everywhere for documentation that would point out my error, but have been unable to find the solution. Any suggestions???
